A Friendly Talk: Walking in God's Principles The Bridge — Knowing the One We Walk With Chapter 6: The Great I AM (I Am Who I Am)

Today I sat back and asked myself, How can I describe God as “I AM WHO I AM”? And honestly… our words fall short. We can’t fully describe His power, His greatness, or His glory. Our human words simply aren’t enough.

So instead of trying to explain God in our own words, let’s let God describe Himself. And He already has—through His Word.

And while He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and beyond anything we can imagine, we can’t forget this: He is also full of compassion, mercy, forgiveness, righteousness, and justice. His greatness doesn’t cancel His gentleness. His authority doesn’t erase His love.

When God says, “I AM WHO I AM,” He’s revealing something simple and powerful: He alone is God. His purposes never fail, His character never changes, and His authority is absolute.

How could a perfect Creator ever make a mistake? He is perfectly righteous, perfectly wise, and perfectly just. And even though He directs our path, He still gives us the choice of which path to walk. Not because we are powerful—but because He is righteous and just.

Think about that. God doesn’t look to us for counsel. He doesn’t need our opinions on how to show grace. It doesn’t matter our status, our background, or how lost in sin we might be—He chooses to forgive, to show mercy, and to pour out blessings.

He tells us exactly who He is and exactly what He will do. In Exodus 33:19 He says:

“I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.”

As our Creator—the One who gave us life and holds every one of our days—how could we ever tell Him what is right or wrong? He is the One who defines right and wrong. That’s real authority.

People change their minds. People break promises. But God stands with us through Jesus Christ in every situation. He reaches out with His righteous right hand and pulls us close. His Word stands forever.

Numbers 23:19 reminds us:

“God is not a man, that He should lie… Has He said, and will He not do?”

This is the character of the Great I AM—steady, sovereign, trustworthy.

We see this again when God speaks to Job out of the whirlwind. He doesn’t defend Himself. He simply points to His power as the One who created everything.

“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?” (Job 38:4–5)

Then He points to the stars—the Pleiades, Orion, and the Great Bear—showing He controls the entire universe (Job 38:31–32).

And He seals it with this truth in Malachi 3:6:

“For I am the Lord, I do not change.”

This leads us to something beautiful: God is not limited by our time, our situation, or our struggles. At any moment we can come before His throne—in our need, in repentance, but also simply in praise, thanksgiving, and worship.

When God says “I AM,” He’s saying: I am the beginning. I am the Creator. I am fully present everywhere, all at once. There is no place we can hide from Him, and no moment where He is absent.

Jeremiah 23:23–24 says:

“Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord.

David felt this deeply in Psalm 139:7–10:

“Where can I go from Your Spirit? If I ascend into heaven, You are there… Even there Your hand shall lead me.”

This is why the name “I AM” carries so much weight. He is the eternal present. The First, the Last, and everything in between.

Isaiah 44:6 declares:

“I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God.”

When we put all these Scriptures together, the picture becomes clear:

The “I AM” is the self-existent, all-powerful King. He chooses. He speaks. He rules. He is the Judge, the Creator, and the only One who can define Himself.

And here’s the encouragement: He chose us. He forgives us. He redeems us. He straightens our path. He calls us into His Kingdom. He calls us His children, inviting us to know Him. The One who created us is the same One who calls us to walk with Him each day. And when we walk in His principles, we are truly walking with Him.

He is the anchor of our faith—because He is already there where we are going.

Final Thoughts

Let's catch a glimpse of the majesty of the Great I AM.

Close your eyes and imagine the beauty of heaven. Picture yourself praising God right where you are. Hear the voices of praise—continuous, unceasing worship echoing before His throne:

“Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”— Revelation 4:8

As the holiness of God fills all creation, millions of angels surround His throne, lifting their voices to declare the worthiness of our Savior:

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!”— Revelation 5:12

Then all of heaven erupts—a shout of victory, joy, and praise that shakes eternity:

“Alleluia! Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to the Lord our God! … Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!”— Revelation 19:1, 6

And here's the part that always touches my heart: The same God who fills heaven with glory invites you and me to come close. To worship Him. To speak to Him. To bring our praise and our prayers right to His throne—coming boldly before the Father through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The Lord's Prayer

“Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”— Matthew 6:9–13

This is the God we worship—the Great I AM. Majestic in heaven, yet present with us each day. Holy. Powerful. Loving. And always inviting us closer through Jesus Christ to know Him, walk with Him, and rest in His love as His children… cherished and loved.

And remember—the real reward of seeking God... is God Himself.

God's desire is to help us and to hear from us. The closer we walk with Him, the further we stand from the enemy.

So, take a breath.

Take a step.

And trust that God's got the rest.

And remember—God doesn't just guide us with wisdom and purpose; He also blesses us with moments of joy, laughter, and peace along the journey.
